A castle wedding ten minutes from the city centre, filmed quietly and without fuss.
A city castle, which films differently
Clontarf Castle is the rare Dublin venue that gives you a castle without giving up the city. Guests can be in the centre in about fifteen minutes, which matters enormously if a chunk of your guest list is flying in and staying in town.
That convenience comes with a trade-off worth knowing about before you plan your day. Clontarf is a city hotel, so it is largely an interior venue. There is no sweeping parkland to walk out into for portraits, and the light you get is the light the rooms give you. In practice that means the day lives or dies on its interiors, and the good news is that they are genuinely characterful: dark timber, stone, and a dramatic central atrium that photographs and films beautifully once you stop fighting it.
My approach here leans into that rather than pretending otherwise. Low-light capable cameras, no big lighting rigs carted around your drinks reception, and no marching you outside for the sake of a shot that the venue was never going to give. It stays a documentary film of your day, in the building you chose.
Planning a wedding at Clontarf Castle
A few things couples ask me about filming here:
- It suits smaller and mid-sized guest lists particularly well. An intimate day does not feel lost here the way it can in a big country house.
- If guests are travelling from abroad, the city location does a lot of quiet work: fewer taxis, fewer logistics, and more of your day spent with the people who came.
- Interiors mean the ceremony and speeches carry more of the film than the outdoor portraits usually would. Give the speeches room in the timeline; they will earn it.

A wedding I've filmed at Clontarf Castle
The film above is Pei and Xin's. It had always been Pei's dream to marry in a castle, and they flew in from Canada to do it, celebrating with fifty close friends and family. It is a good example of what this venue does well: a small guest list, people who had travelled a long way, and a day built around them rather than around a room plan.
