A discreet, documentary-style wedding film at a restored walled garden estate in Stradbally, Co. Waterford.
A walled garden centuries in the making
The walled garden at Woodhouse has been part of the estate for several hundred years. It fell into disrepair before new owners took over in 2012 and began restoring it: rebuilding around 450 metres of wall, a job that took eight stonemasons and three labourers roughly 4,000 hours between them.
What's there now is about an acre and a half of garden: flower beds, lawns, a raised pergola looking back over the whole space, and a water feature couples often use for the ceremony itself.
Where weddings happen at Woodhouse
The Garden Room is the main indoor reception space, opening straight out onto the walled garden. Guests can stay on site afterwards too: the estate has a handful of cottages (Gate Lodge, Melon Cottage, Stewards Cottage among them) and a modern apartment, the Hayloft, so a Woodhouse wedding can easily stretch into a weekend.
How I'd approach it
Here's how I work, wherever I'm filming: compact equipment, no staging, no directing, and a habit of staying out of the way so the day looks like it actually happened rather than a production.
- A ceremony by the water feature in the walled garden, with the pergola and mature trees behind it, is about as natural a backdrop as it gets.
- The woodland grounds and fire pit give the evening a completely different feel to the afternoon, worth knowing if you want that contrast on film.
