A castle on its own private island, reached by car ferry. Some venues do the storytelling for you; this is one of them.
An island wedding, on film
Waterford Castle is unlike anywhere else in Ireland: a historic castle on a private island, and the only way on or off is the car ferry. That crossing does something to a wedding day; guests arrive as if into another world, and the outside world genuinely stays behind.
For a film, the island is a gift. The ferry, the avenue, the castle itself: the story arrives in scenes, and aerial footage from above the island (with the venue's blessing) shows what makes the place extraordinary in a way nothing else can. You can see it in the film above.
Inside, it's all character: stone, wood panelling and firelight, which suits my way of working: documentary style, low-key and compact equipment. Nobody's day should be rearranged for a camera, least of all here.
The wedding in the film above was a New Year's Eve celebration, complete with confetti cannons, sparklers and a midnight countdown. If you're planning a winter or NYE wedding here, that film is the honest answer to what it can look like.
Planning a wedding at Waterford Castle
A few things couples ask me about filming here:
- Everything runs on the ferry, including your suppliers; build a little slack into the morning timings and the day stays calm.
- If you'd like aerial footage of the island, say so early; it needs the right weather and the venue's go-ahead, so it's a plan rather than an afterthought.
- Winter and NYE weddings here are special but the daylight is short; an earlier ceremony buys the light for the moments that need it.
