A theatre built for moments
Smock Alley Theatre is one of Dublin's most atmospheric ceremony spaces: a working theatre on a site that dates back to 1662, tucked between the river and Temple Bar. Ceremonies here feel intimate and a little bit dramatic in the best way, with your people gathered close around you in a room built for exactly that.
Theatres are made for an audience's sightlines, which makes them wonderful for a discreet videographer: I can be close enough to catch every word and glance without ever being in anyone's way. Documentary style, compact equipment, no staging; the room does the atmosphere, I just keep it.
A Smock Alley ceremony usually pairs with a reception elsewhere in the city, and the walk between the two is often my favourite footage of the day: the two of you, just married, moving through Temple Bar while Dublin reacts around you. The wedding in the film above continued at the Morrison Hotel on the quays, and the city footage in between stitched the whole film together.
City weddings reward a videographer who knows the streets. I've filmed across Dublin for years, so I know where the quiet corners and the good light are, even on a busy Saturday in Temple Bar.
Planning a Smock Alley wedding
A few things couples ask me about filming here:
- Plan the ceremony-to-reception move like a scene, not a commute; a ten minute walk through the city with a camera nearby beats a taxi dash.
- Temple Bar is busiest from late afternoon; an earlier ceremony gives you quieter streets for photos and film.
- Theatre lighting is part of the magic; I work with the room's light rather than adding my own, so nothing about the ceremony feels like a shoot.
