A discreet, documentary-style wedding film at a 17th century estate house on the edge of Kilkenny city, with a modern hotel and 170 acres of grounds built up around it.

An old house inside a big resort

Lyrath House dates back to the 17th century, and it still stands at the centre of the estate rather than being reduced to a plaque in the lobby. The hotel has grown up around it: 141 bedrooms, a spa, a handful of bars and restaurants, and 170 acres of lakes, historic gardens and woodland outside the door. It's a genuinely large place, closer in scale to a resort than to the private houses and small castles I film most weeks.

I filmed a wedding here on 21 August 2026.

I work documentary style: compact equipment, no staging, no directing, and a habit of blending into the background that couples tend to mention afterwards. A venue this size usually has more happening around a wedding, other guests, other events, than a private house does. That's exactly the kind of setting where staying unobtrusive matters more, not less.

The rooms

Where Lyrath weddings actually happen

Lyrath splits into two very different filming jobs depending on where the day takes you. The 17th century Drawing Rooms, in the original house, are used for ceremonies for up to 100 guests, looking out over the estate's formal gardens. For the reception, most weddings move to the Maginnes and McCurdy Suites in the modern wing, which combine into the main ballroom with natural daylight through the day and lake views.

In the evening the ballroom runs on a fairy-light curtain along the back wall rather than one big feature, which reads softer and warmer on camera than a conference-hall setup usually does. The stage sits at the other end of the room from the dancefloor, which leaves the band and DJ plenty of room to quietly set up without disturbing guests, so the transition into dancing once the meal finishes comes quicker and smoother.

The older part of the house has its own character too: a red-carpet staircase under a stained-glass roof light, better suited to portraits and arrivals than to the reception itself.

Planning a wedding at Lyrath

A few things worth knowing about filming here:

It's a big resort: 170 acres, a spa, and 141 bedrooms on site, so guests can comfortably stay over without anyone needing to drive.
Ceremony and reception can both happen on site, though within Lyrath itself you're still moving between the historic Drawing Rooms and the modern ballroom wing.
The formal gardens in front of the original house are the strongest outdoor backdrop, and they're a short walk from the door.
