There has been a castle on this site near Birr since 1209. What stands today is a Gothic Revival building, set beneath the ancient slopes of the Slieve Bloom Mountains, with 37 individually styled bedrooms for guests who stay over.
Where weddings happen at Kinnitty
The Great Hall of the O'Carrolls is the main reception space, a medieval-style banqueting hall with vaulted ceilings and candlelight rather than overhead lighting. Weddings run from 100 to 200 guests on a Friday or Saturday.
How I'd approach it
Here's how I work, wherever I'm filming: compact equipment, no staging, no directing, and a habit of staying out of the way so the day looks like it actually happened rather than a production.
- The Great Hall runs on candlelight in the evening, which is a good look in person and worth knowing your videographer is comfortable filming in low light.
- The Slieve Bloom Mountains as a backdrop are a genuine reason to step outside for photographs, weather allowing.
