A Georgian house on an older site
The current house dates to 1764, built on the site of an earlier castle that didn't survive the Cromwellian wars. The ruins of that original castle are still there on the grounds if you know where to look. The estate around it runs to 21 acres of mature, formal gardens, on the Maynooth Road just outside Dunboyne.
The hotel keeps to one wedding a day, so whichever room you're in, the place is yours.
Where weddings happen at Dunboyne Castle
There's a choice of two very different rooms. The Georgian Drawing Room holds up to 50 for something more intimate, with the period detail you'd expect from a house this age. The Tara Ballroom is the contemporary option, recently renovated, and takes weddings up to 220 guests.
How I'd approach it
Here's how I work, wherever I'm filming: compact equipment, no staging, no directing, and a habit of staying out of the way so the day looks like it actually happened rather than a production.
- The Drawing Room and the Tara Ballroom are different enough in character that it's worth knowing which one you're getting before the day, so I can plan the light for it.
- The formal gardens and the old castle ruins both make for a good ten minutes outside between the ceremony and the meal.
