Cliff at Lyons Wedding Videographer
A discreet, documentary-style wedding film at a restored canal-side village outside Celbridge, one of my favourite places to film in the county.
A village built around a canal lock
The main house at Lyons was built in 1797 for Nicholas Lawless, the first Lord Cloncurry. The village around it grew up in the 1820s beside one of the Grand Canal's historic double locks: a mill, an inn, a small hotel, even a Church of Ireland boarding school. Guinness barges worked this stretch of canal right up until 1960.
UCD owned the estate from 1962, and the lockyard buildings fell into disrepair over the following decades. Tony Ryan, the Ryanair co-founder, bought Lyons Demesne in 1996 and restored it; CLIFF bought "the Village" in January 2016 and reopened it as a hotel that July. It's a genuinely unusual setting, a real village rather than a single building, and it photographs and films like nowhere else I work.
The Orangery and the Mill
The Orangery is a Victorian conservatory with floor-to-ceiling glass looking out over the estate lawns, licensed for ceremonies for up to 60. Both weddings I've filmed here married in the Orangery.
The Mill Restaurant takes over 100 for the meal, with double-height ceilings, a grand fireplace and wide windows looking out over the old millrace waterfall. Between the two rooms, and the wider village setting, Cliff at Lyons can hold up to 200 guests.
I work documentary style wherever I'm filming: compact equipment, no staging, no directing. A setting this distinctive doesn't need any help from me, just someone staying out of the way while it happens.
Planning a wedding at Cliff at Lyons
- The village setting means a genuine sense of place: canal, lock, mill and old estate buildings all within a short walk of each other.
- The Orangery's glass walls make it a lovely space to film in at golden hour, whatever time of year you're marrying.
- It's a short run from home for me, near Celbridge, so no travel drama on the morning of your wedding.
